Southwest Key Community Development Project

Southwest Key is a private, non-profit agency that has made a
difference in the lives of thousands of youth and their families for over 16 years. Dr. Juan Sanchez, founder of Southwest Key is embarking on a project to improve the lives of disadvantaged families in East Austin through the Community Development Project in the Johnston Terrace/Govalle neighborhoods. Plans call for a business incubator, after-school tutoring, a community computer lab, training for  Graduate Equivalency Degree certificates, English as a Second Language classes and job training. Southwest Key offices will also be moved to the east Austin location.

Hispanic Connect supports the efforts of Southwest Key and Dr. Juan Sanchez. Efforts and projects that improve the lives of students, families and the entire Austin community are part of our shared goals. We as Hispanics and  Austin residents must organize and promote community development  projects in Austin. We as an organized voice must  inform elected and government officials about community needs and how  identified needs should be addressed.

The Southwest Key Community Development Project has received support
from the United State Government, the Community Development Block Grant(CDBG) program and is continuing to pursue support and funding from the City of Austin. Southwest Key has received support from an impressive coalition of Community leaders and project supporters including Marta Cotera, longtime East Austin Activist and publisher and Susana Almanza, Executive Director of the East Austin Environemental Group, PODER(People Organized in Defense of Earth and Her Resources. Hispanic-Connect adds our support and voice to the SouthWest Key Community Development Project. United it can be done!-as Cesar Chavez used to say, "si se puede!"
